Support and funding for the renovation of the building came from many generous local individual supporters and foundations in the Kalamazoo community. Epic Center fills that role in Kalamazoo and throughout Southwest Michigan. Arts facilities have again and again proved to be economic generators and catalysts for the cities they inspire. At the time of the renovation and collaboration among the different arts organizations, the few other shared arts spaces were typically live/work spaces for individual artists, combining residences with studios. The Epic Center features a community box office, a restaurant, a retail space, two modern performance theatre spaces, and the offices of ten cultural and artistic organizations. Renovated from a closed Jacobson’s department store in 1999, it opened in 2000 and is home for arts and culture in the greater Kalamazoo area and Southwest Michigan. The The Epic Center is a four-story building located in beautiful Downtown Kalamazoo. The Capital Grilles wine list features more than 350 selections, and its floor-to-ceiling wine kiosk regularly houses 3,500 - 5,000 bottles.
